Augustin Smith Clayton was a member of the first graduating class at the University of Georgia and founder of the Demosthenian Society. Clayton Street in Athens, Clayton County and Clayton, Georgia are all named for him. French botanist and traveler. The son of botanist Andre Michaux (1746-1802), he made several visits to the United States. In February 1806 he embarked on a sea voyage for Charleston (S.C.) but was captured by the British en route and detained in the Bermudas.
